A two-year battle to get public toilets reinstated in Newark town centre is almost over.

Work on the new toilets at the back of White Hart Yard is due to start next month before opening in March.

They will replace the public toilets in St Mark's Place that closed in 2008.

Newark and Sherwood District Council is working in partnership with the owners of St Mark’s Place, the Oakgate Group Plc, to build the toilets, which have been designed by MHI, Newark.

A council spokesman said the tender for the work would be awarded soon.

A meeting with consultees took place last week when plans for the new toilets were revealed.

A member of the Campaign For Toilets in Newark, Mrs Mary Holland, said they were very impressed with the designs.

The campaign collected about 1,500 signatures protesting against the lack of toilet provision in the town centre.
