Newark and Sherwood District Council hails Tour of Britain a major success

Towns and communities along the route of the Tour of Britain Nottinghamshire stage were really made to feel a part of the occasion, it is said.

History was made on the streets of Nottinghamshire, with the announcement a record was set in the Tour of Britain as cyclists crossed the finish line in Newark.

Dutch Jumbo Visma team rider Olav Kooij came in first place to be named stage winner and overall race leader, as he had done in all three previous stages of the prestigious race — to match Edvald Boasson Hagen's feat.

The race started at Edwinstowe and passed through much of the district, including Southwell, before finishing in Newark.

Crowds lined Victoria Street where they drummed on the barriers and donned Robin Hood hats for the finish and thronged into Sconce and Devon Park.

Paul Peacock, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The Tour of Britain is an incredible event, having stage 4 both start and finish in Newark and Sherwood District has made this year’s event very special.

“The organisation of the event went very smoothly meaning that our villages and towns along the route could really feel part of it.

“It was great to see so many people in and around Edwinstowe and Newark for the start and finish of the stage.

“It really has been a boost for our district and the whole of Nottinghamshire, a great chance to showcase our area and hopefully persuade more people to come and visit us.”

Champion Olav Kooij took to the stage not once, but four times as he was named stage winner, race leader, won the Cottages.com points jersey and named Sportive Breaks’ best young rider.

Olav said: “It’s nice to see all these people out on the route, its great to get the support from the crowds.”
