Bingham town centre cordoned off by Nottinghamshire Police, with fire service and paramedics at the scene




A police cordon has been set up in the centre of a town.

Nottinghamshire Police are in attendence at Bingham market place, surrounding the town’s Buttercross landmark.

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of assault in relation to the incident.

A nearby business owner confirmed emergency services were at the scene.

The witness said: “There’s a fire engine and police, I think maybe an ambulance or two.”

Nottinghamshire Police said: “We were called to a disturbance in Market Place, Bingham, shortly before 3pm today.

“A commercial premises has been evacuated and a cordon put in place. Officers will remain in the area as investigations continue.

“As part of this incident officers were also deployed to a premises in Main Street, Stathern, where a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of assault.

“This is an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to the public. It is also unconnected to Tuesday's major incident in Nottingham.

“Anyone with additional information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 512 of 15 June.”

An uncorroborated report on Twitter suggested the incident had occured at the nearby Wetherspoon pub, The Buttercross, with the pub being doused in petrol.

There are condradicting reports on social media as to if nearby school children had been evacuated from the area or kept inside the school.
