Snowdrops and vegetables will be planted in Newark today to mark the launch of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain In Bloom season.

The snowdrops will be planted in the castle grounds from 10am. An hour later flowers, seed potatoes and onion sets will be planted at allotments off Eton Avenue.

The planting is being organised by the Newark In Bloom Committee and Eton Avenue Growers’ Association and is part of a national event to create a green river of plant life.

The chairman of Newark In Bloom, Mr George Wilkinson, said the planting would kick-start their involvement.

He said: “We got a bronze medal last year but we want much better this year.”

The Eton Avenue association is entering the competition in its own right as part of the It’s Your Neighbourhood section.
