Cherry tree planted at David Wilson Homes’ Fernwood Village for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
A vibrant cherry tree has been planted at David Wilson Homes’ Fernwood Village development to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s reign, David Wilson Homes and Barratt Homes — both subsidiaries of Barratt Group — have planted over 1,500 trees in communities across Britain.
The Jubilee Big Tree Plant saw the country’s largest housebuilder plant trees to recognise the Queen’s wish to create a legacy for future generations.
Members of the David Wilson Homes site team, alongside the chairman of Fernwood Parish Council Barry Smith and representatives from Royal Newark in Bloom, attended the ceremony held at Fernwood to honour the planting of the jubilee tree.
John Reddington, managing director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “Her Majesty the Queen has been a constant positive force in all of our lives since taking the throne in 1953.
“We wanted to recognise her incredible service to the country and her communities by fulfilling Her Majesty’s wish to plant trees that improve the sustainability of the local environment. It was wonderful to bring the community together to mark the Queen’s jubilee celebration.”
Barry Smith, chairman at Fernwood Parish Council, said: “Fernwood has been transformed in the 70 years that Queen Elizabeth II has reigned and continues to grow.
“It will be a pleasure to see this beautiful cherry tree flourish and it will be a lasting reminder of the Queen’s reign and service to our country.”
Jenni Oliver, secretary at Royal Newark in Bloom, said: “We are privileged to have performed one of Her Majesty’s wishes of planting as many trees as part of her platinum jubilee year to improve local environment.
“East Midlands in Bloom and Royal Newark in Bloom are organisations to bring communities together and are grateful to David Wilson Homes for asking us to join them and making this possible.
“We would like to see the community of Fernwood join us and enter Fernwood in Bloom next year, after all David Wilson Homes have made the start.”
David Wilson Homes has continued its celebration of the Platinum Jubilee by becoming a long-term partner of the Royal Horticultural Society, whose patron is the Queen.
The developer, which was named Sustainable House Builder of the Year, will sponsor the water feature within the show-shopping Paradise Garden at RHS Bridgewater in Salford, the first urban garden created by the RHS.
Sue Saddington, chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council, one of Royal Newark in Bloom’s sponsors this year, presented a cheque for £100 to Friends of The Sconce.
The Light Up Newark event, where people could buy a bottle light while contributing the group’s coffers was said to be a great success, making over £500 for Royal Newark in Bloom.
Royal Newark in Bloom donated £100 to The Friends of The Sconce to help with purchasing new tools.
Entrants into East Midlands in Bloom from the town will be Friends of The Wharf, Friends of The Sconce, Chatham Court Community, St Mary’s Church Gardens, Friends of Newark Library.
