Newark Book Festival to return for its ninth year

One of Newark’s biggest annual events is set to open its ninth chapter this summer.

Newark Book Festival will return from July 10 to 13 with the theme — Celebrating Creativity.

The four-day, founded by the Arts Council, will bring together authors from across the area but also international names, with events being held across multiple venues in the town centre.

From street theatre and storytelling to spoken word performances, open mic nights and panel debates, the events offer something to all ages.

There will also be writing workshops, rapping and family-friendly activities.

This year’s theme highlights the many forms of storytelling that have shaped culture throughout history.

Visitors can expect an eclectic mix of literature, poetry, plays, and non-fiction, reflecting diverse perspectives and encouraging audiences to explore their own creative sides.

Artistic Director Sara Bullimore said: “We are excited to be bringing a dash of creativity to this ninth festival.

“It may look a little different than usual, but there is certainly lots of fun in store for everyone this summer.”

Those interested in becoming sponsors, volunteers, Young Ambassadors, stallholders and Festival Friends can sign up on the Newark Book Festival’s website.

The book festival was established in the town in 2017 and is now a signature event in Newark’s cultural calendar, which not only promotes the power of literature but education and venues across the town.

Also during the event, in an interview with Dr Tim Rideout, internationally bestselling crime writer and award winner Sophie Hannah will be speaking about her work at Newark Palace Theatre on Friday (July 11) at 7pm, including sharing her latest murder mystery — No One Would Do What the Lamberts Have Done.

The book is acclaimed for its humour as well as its audaciously clever twist.

Tickets go on general sale on March 22 for £12 but Festival Friends can buy them in advance from March 15 for £10.
