Newark's Aiden Aslin reacts on camera to being given death sentence in Donetsk People's Republic
Television footage shows Newark's Aiden Aslin's reaction to being given the death sentence.
In the footage, published by Sky News, 28-year-old Aiden says he hoped for a different outcome and that God will be the one to judge him when the time comes.
"I was hoping the sentence would be a lot fairer judging the circumstances in which I helped the investigation and also because I surrendered to the Donetsk People's Republic," said Aiden.
"I wish it could be different but God will be the one that will judge me when the time comes."
It comes after Russian-owned news agency RIA Novosti reported earlier today that both prisoners of war from Britain, Aiden and Shaun Pinner from Bedfordshire, were sentenced to death in the Donetsk People's Republic, which is held by pro-Russian rebels.
Moroccan national Saaudun Brahim has also been sentenced to death
The court that has passed sentence is not internationally recognised.
Both Aiden and Shaun were serving members of Ukraine’s armed forces and the UK has made clear they are prisoners of war entitled to immunity — and should not face prosecution for taking part in hostilities.
Following the announcement the family has spoken to the Advertiser.
They have called on the UK and Ukrainian governments to do all they can to help Aiden.
Speaking to Sky News, Newark MP Robert Jenrick said: "They should be being treated in accordance with international law and the Geneva Convention which certainly precludes show trials and kangaroo ports of this kind and the death penalty.
"I've known Aiden's family for many years and have known Aiden for almost as long as I've been an MP — they're really good people, they've been through an appalling ordeal while Aiden has been in captivity with the Russians.
"And, now of course, today is the worst possible news for them."
