Man jailed after Ollerton assault and strangulation caught on camera

A man has been jailed after he was caught on camera beating and strangling his former partner.

Richard Gill, 36, was filmed on CCTV attacking the woman as she sat in an office style chair at her home in Ollerton, forcing her across the room with hands around her throat.

Gill, who became angry during an argument, had attempted to pull the camera from the wall just seconds before the attack, on November 5, 2024.

The distressing footage clearly showed the strangulation offence, and also recorded the sound of a further assault.

Gill was arrested two days afterwards and later pleaded guilty to one count of intentional strangulation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He also admitted to assaulting another woman October 2020 during a family argument.

When he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, March 12, Gill, of Chapel Road, Indian Queen’s Cornwall, was jailed for 21 months.

He was also given a restraining order banning him form further contact with his victim.

Detective Constable Jacqueline Sharpe said: “Gill is a violent bully who launched a vicious and unprovoked attack on a woman in her own home.

“The footage of the assault is hard to watch, but was ultimately a vial piece of evidence in bringing this man to justice.

“Armed with his very strong evidence of his true character ,we were then able to use medical evidence to help convict him of a separate attack on another woman four years beforehand.

“This kind of violence against women is utterly abhorrent and I hope this sentence sends out a very clear message to others who think they can behave in a similar way that we will do everything we can to bring them to justice.”
