You Can Do Sport's virtual open day offers insight into programme

An educational programme had added three new sports to its services.

You Can Do Sport has added boxing, rugby and rowing to its programme ahead of the new academic year.

The BTEC course, which is expanding to A-Levels, is offered through Magnus Church of England Academy. It is aimed at those aged 16 to 19.

A virtual open day will take place on Thursday, March 4, from 4.30pm on its Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/YCDSAcademy) to address the updates.

"Currently, we offer football and netball," said director Natalia Postlethwaite: "but come September we are going to be offering rugby, boxing and rowing as well."

The practical rugby work will be put on in partnership with Newark Rugby Club, while Chris Bates and his team at Newark Rowing Club will run the rowing aspect of things.

Boxing trainer Carl Greaves will lead the course in his discipline.

"It is very big news for the town as they are all big clubs and personalities," said Natalia.

"They will be trained by the very best people in the town in their respective sports.

"Previously we offered the BTEC, but from September we are offering A-Levels as well, and hopefully that attracts students away from Grantham and Sleaford."

She said during coronavirus pandemic it had been difficult to offer an insight into the You Can Do Sport courses.

"You Can Do Sport wants to bolster Newark's status on the sporting map. We want to champion sport even more," she said.
