Newark Town Hall museum volunteer, Jean Hughes, has died aged 97

A volunteer at Newark Town Hall museum, Jean Hughes, has died, aged 97.

Jean loved volunteering at the museum because she met some very interesting people, said her daughter, the artist Nikki Mckay.

Nikki said: “Summer time, which brought many tourists to the town, was her favourite time.

“Jean was a dance teacher who at one time had a large school in Derby and has taught hundreds of people to dance during her long career.

“Even when retired to Spain with husband, Walter, she ran classes for the expats out there.”

She died at Kings Mill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield, on February 1, from natural causes.

Jean leaves a large family of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of her life in the summer months when its safe to do so.
