Angell’s Fisheries on Barnbygate, Newark host second Pick n Chips event

Those who spent their morning volunteering to litter pick in Newark were given a tasty reward by one of the town’s chippies.

After the success of their first ‘Pick ‘n’ Chips’ community litter pick event, Angell’s Fisheries hosted their second event on Thursday March 20.

Aged from just three years old up to 80, there were 11 hardy volunteers meeting at their premises on Barnbygate and they ended up collecting 11 bags full of rubbish.

Co-owner Sophie Angell said: “The initiative is to put the message out there to people to keep Newark clean.

“We’ve got bins in Newark but it’s not always deter people from littering.”

Newark and Sherwood District Council leant the volunteers plenty of equipment for the litter pick and the team covered several of the streets and cycle paths in Newark, and enjoyed a complimentary fish and chip lunch back at Angell’s Fisheries when they were done.

“It’s a really nice way to meet people,” Sophie said, “And there’s something satisfying about picking up lots of lotter, and it’s surprising how much fun it is. Hopefully it’s something we can build on.”

Sophie said that the next event will be aimed at families in the community, and that all are welcome to come along and join in, with the date to be confirmed shortly.
