Volunteers get busy near the river
Volunteers from Severn Trent spent a day helping to tidy an area alongside the River Trent in Newark.
The group took part through the company’s Community Champions project, which allows staff to spend two working days a year volunteering in the community. They worked with the Canal and River Trust charity.
The organiser, Leanne Town, said that as Severn Trent was working on a £60m improvement scheme in Newark at the moment it was important for them to give something back to the community. The work is being carried out by BNM Alliance.
“Along with staff from BNM, the team transformed a section of the river turning it from drab to fab in just a day,” she said.
“We hope the locals love the new look.”
The volunteer development co-ordinator for the Canal and River Trust, Mr Wayne Ball, said: “The area is already looking a lot neater and we will be able to plant up the hedgerow, which will help to make it even more attractive and become a better place for wildlife.”
