Volunteers helped to dig out the pond at a community garden that is taking shape in Ollerton.

Workers from Recycling Ollerton and Boughton joined project leader Mr Andy Hollis (pictured front) to create the pond, the latest addition to the garden off Forest Road by Ollerton Cemetery.

The pond has gently sloping sides to allow wildlife to move in and out and wildflowers will also be planted. Schools will use it for pond dipping once it is finished.

The garden has already been cleared and landscaped. A herb garden has been created with the help of Feel Good Foods, a path laid and an entrance built off Forest Road.

Mr Hollis said: “It will be somewhere people can come and sit and reflect and take in the wildlife.”

The area was previously wasteland and the project to transform it is Big Lottery funded.

The Ollerton Pet Shop Girls charitable trust also contributed.

Jobs still to do include wildflower and hedge-planting and the installation of fencing and benches.

The aim is to complete it in time for next spring. Anybody who wants to volunteer can contact Mr Hollis at ecologic@ahollis.co.uk
