People invited to walk the talk through history and learn about a dark and bloody period of English history – The War of the Roses and its finale of the Battle of Stoke Field
People are invited to walk the talk through history and learn about a dark and bloody period of English history.
The War of the Roses was a series of dynastic civil wars fought between the houses of Lancaster and York for the English throne.
The Battle of Stoke Field on 16 June, 1487, is considered by many to the last fought in the War of the Roses and was a decisive engagement in an attempt by leading Yorkists to unseat Henry VII in favour of the pretender Lambert Simnel.
The tour takes place on Monday, September 4, with a meeting time of 10.30am at the Women's Institute building in East Stoke (NG23 5QL). It is an activity organised by the Newark Parish Church walking group.
The walking group and the talk be led by Andrew Fearn.
It promises to be a very interesting introduction to a local landmark in Medieval history, whatever the weather, with a cafe stop (Hardy's Farm Shop Cafe) afterwards, which serves food. The terrain varies from road to track to field margin so wear appropriate footwear.
Go along and learn about a little-known but important part of local history that ore-dated the more widely known involvement of Newark in the later civil wars.
If you need help with transport, a certain number of lifts are available from Newark, returning around lunch time. Call Tom Collier on 07960 708256. Or simply turn up to take part.
