War project inspires

Children at Chuter Ede Primary School, Balderton, have been imagining what life as a second world war evacuee might have been like.

Pupils aged nine and ten dressed in 1940s clothes and took part in drama activities as part of a project on the war.

They read letters written by evacuees and wrote about how they would have felt if they had been evacuated themselves.

The project has been led by two teachers, Mrs Hannah Allan and Mrs Christine Hopkins.

Mrs Allan said pupils had ten days to organise a 1940s outfit and many had borrowed items from grandparents, including gas masks.

“They have really entered into the spirit of it,” she said.

The school has a dig-for-victory garden where pupils have been working to grow vegetables used in the school kitchen.
