Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service issue warning over charging devices overnight following house fire in Woodthorpe in which firecrews from Edwistowe attended

Fire officers have issued a warning over charging devices overnight following a fire that destroyed a house.

A fire investigation has found that a lithium-ion battery failure within a laptop left on charge overnight caused a fire that left a Woodthrope home destroyed.

Around 3.35am on June 26, firefighters were called to a house fire on The Crescent in Woodthorpe.

Fire crews from Edwinstowe, Arnold, Carlton, Stockhill, London Road and Mansfield attended this incident.

The family of four escaped without any injuries as the smoke alarms sounded.

Beth Hayman, fire investigation officer, said: “This is a very devastating incident in which a family lost their house and belongings.

“I urge everyone not to continuously charge electrical devices and to ensure they are switched off at the wall socket overnight. When charging devices ensure they are charged using the manufactured product from the device provider.

“Fortunately, due to the working smoke alarms within the property, the family managed to escape to safety. Make sure you test yours regularly as they save lives.”

Nottinghamshire fire and rescue service appeals to anyone unable to consider the fire risk in their home to arrange a free safe and well visit through their website.
