Waste call in request rejected
A request to call in controversial plans for a waste transfer station in Newark have been rejected by the Government.
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Mr Eric Pickles, turned down the request by Newark's MP, Mr Patrick Mercer, after looking at the application.
Mr Mercer said he was extremely disappointed by the minister's decision, which leaves the way clear for Veolia Environmental Services to continue its plans for the station on Brunel Drive.
The plans were approved by Nottinghamshire County Council last month.
Mr Mercer said he was now in discussion with Newark and Sherwood District Council, which opposed the plans, about a way forward.
It has also been announced that the county council's new household waste recycling centre on Brunel Drive will open on Monday, November 15.
Cotham tip will close the day before.
