A recycling scheme set up by students has won first prize in a regional science competition.

Six pupils from year eight of Toot Hill School, Bingham, competed against schools from across Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire in the Pera Foundation’s Go4SET (Go for Science, Engineering and Technology) competition.

They spent three months working after school on a project designed to inspire the scientists, engineers and business entrepreneurs of the future.

Each team was asked to investigate ways in which their school could better use its waste.

Toot Hill came up with two main strategies, focusing on recycling waste paper and reducing energy usage by encouraging staff and students to switch off appliances by using stickers as reminders.

Science teacher Mr Neil Rossin said it was trialled in the science block and the team worked out it could save thousands of pounds if rolled out across the school.
