Waste plans opposed

Plans for a waste facility on the Brunel Drive industrial estate in Newark have been opposed by district councillors.

Members of the district council's planning committee voted unanimously against the application for a waste transfer station yesterday evening.

It was submitted by Veolia Environmental Services, Nottinghamshire County Council's waste contractor.

Councillors were worried about the traffic problems the facility would cause and its impact on the environment and other businesses.

Other objections included the unsuitable location and unattractive use of the site, the lack of clarity on opening hours, the low number of jobs provided, and the inadequate capacity.

The application will be decided by the county council.
