Arrest of one of Nottinghamshire's most wanted men captured in tonight's Police Interceptors episode on Channel 5
The dramatic arrest of one of Nottinghamshire's most prolific wanted men is captured in tonight's episode of Channel 5's Police Interceptors.
Klayton Smith was frequently wanted by police and was most recently being sought for a string of violent offences involving weapons.
The 28-year-old had failed to appear at a court hearing and officers had exhausted various addresses and pieces of intelligence in a bid to locate him. However, he had seemingly gone to ground.
In the episode firearms officers are called to a report of people with knives and swords on a street in the Clifton area but, when they arrive, there's no sign of a disturbance.
Suddenly a grey Ford C-max car comes around the corner and the two occupants are ordered to come out of the car. There is a tense stand-off until the pair finally surrender.
Officers search the car and find two blades, a knife and a machete. The occupants are arrested and claim the weapons were a defence against Klayton Smith who had been threatening them.
Operational support teams flood to the area searching for the wanted man. After reaching a couple of dead ends, the crew receive a call from the owner of a local pub.
She called 999 at around 4.30pm on October 20, 2020, to say a man walked in 'absolutely wired up, trying to pick a fight.' She stated his name was Klayton.
Officers head to the scene on Hartness Road, Clifton, and spot Smith leaving the pub. The atmosphere is tense as officers approach with their Tasers drawn and it unclear whether Smith will accept his fate. He eventually complies while keeping a hand free for his cigarette.
Smith, of Ruddington Lane in Nottingham, pleaded to guilty at Nottingham Magistrates' Court to 15 offences including assault by beating, common assault, criminal damage, threatening behaviour, possession of cocaine, possession of cannabis, failing to stop, failing to provide a specimen, as well as other driving offences.
He was sentenced to five months in prison on March 1, 2021.
Detective Sergeant Andy Buxton, who was involved in the investigation, said: "Smith was a prolific violent offender who had deliberately been trying to escape the court process and hide from police as we tried to bring him to justice.
"He had been circulated to the media as wanted and we had received various pieces of intelligence on him, but each time the trail went cold.
"The arrest captured on Police Interceptors shows how skilled our operational support teams are in tracking down and arresting potentially dangerous people. We're also really grateful to the public for their support and to all the people who provided us with information.
"It gave the teams great satisfaction to bring Smith to justice and proves that in the end, the law will always win out."
Also in the programme tonight, a pack of motorcyclists fall foul of the police stinger after attempting to wreak havoc through a town, as well as entry teams smashing their way into a flat containing class B drugs.
Finally, knife-crime officers sneak up on a drug deal taking place in broad daylight and arrest a suspected dealer with cash in his hands and heroin in his pockets.
Catch all this action and more every Wednesday at 8pm on Channel 5.
