A cyclist involved in a dangerous close passing has released footage of the incident.

"Unfortunately it is not an unusual experience, we go out three to four times a week and it happens on most trips," he said.

"You think, you are riding along and a couple of tonnes of steel goes past your ear.

"I think it is why most Newark cyclists ride on the pavement, it is not a very cycle-friendly town."

1st Fresh Foods, a fresh produce distribution company, released a statement in response to the footage.

A spokesman said: "I have advised and cautioned the driver of this incident and I will take up the matter on our next staff meeting.

"I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."

To improve safety for cyclists, Jonathan is calling for increased cycle infrastructure.

He said: "You cannot have lorries and cars fighting for the same space as cyclists, pedestrians have a separate space because they're vulnerable but cyclists are just as vulnerable.

"Pedestrians are afraid of cyclists on the pavement, but they are there because they are afraid of cars.

"It is a vicious cycle."

He acknowledged some work was being carried out to give cyclists a safer space to travel in Newark, but said those undertaking the works do not understand what cyclists need.

In the meantime, Jonathan and other members of the cycling club keep safe by riding in groups, and recording the trip to ensure they have evidence of dangerous incidents.

Jonathan added: "We have been complaining for quite some time.

"It will not stop until there is segregation between cars and cyclists."
