Expectant mothers can join a pool-based exercise class that can help ease medical conditions experienced during pregnancy.

Debra Christian runs aqua natal sessions at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, off Bowbridge Road.

The movement in water aids the lymphatic system which helps to prevent swelling of the legs, a common problem in pregnancy.

The classes allow women to stay active and participate in light exercise during pregnancy and after giving birth.

Nicola Juden, 36, of Newark, who is expecting her first baby, has been attending the classes.

Nicola, who is in her third trimester, said: “I generally like keeping fit but I needed to find something that would allow me to continue exercising in my later stages of pregnancy.

“I have been really enjoying it so far. It is a nice mix of exercises and it has particularly helped with my pelvic problem.

“Aqua natal is also mentally refreshing.”

Julie Nieminen, who is expecting her first baby, has also benefited from the classes.

Julie, of Balderton, said: “Before I was pregnant, I was very sporty and enjoyed running but I needed to find something a little gentler.

“I have had a bit of a back problem throughout my pregnancy, which the aqua classes have helped with.”

'I like to keep the classes fun'

The class starts with a warm-up, which is followed by light aerobic exercises using the water as a resistance aid, making it fun while challenging coordination skills.

This is followed by conditioning work on different parts of the body using water-based equipment such as floats.

To finish, ladies take part in relaxation exercises and stretches.

The classes are open to all abilities. Debra, an experienced fitness and aerobics instructor, adapts the exercises to suit pregnant women.

She said: “I always have a quick chat with my ladies first, so I get to know them a bit better.

“The water helps relax them, improve balance and keeps them moving.

“Aqua exercise can help to prevent swelling in the legs.

“I like to keep the classes fun too.”

Debra said it was about giving pregnant women a safe and effective workout in a safe environment.

The classes are on Mondays from 8.15pm to 9pm and on Wednesdays from 3.15pm to 3.55pm.

Spaces are limited so advance booking is required.
