The Newark Advertiser team tried Bakkavor Desserts Valentine’s Day dessert edition
Valentine’s Day may be over, but our love for sweets lives on as we dive into Bakkavor Desserts' Valentine’s edition to find our favorite treat.
As supermarket shelves filled with desserts ahead of February 14, we also sweetened our days with some romantic treats as the Bakkavor team delivered some boxes outside our office.
From chocolate and salted caramel to lemon and raspberry, there were flavours and textures to please all the different tastes.
From chocolate and salted caramel to lemon and raspberry, there was a flavor to satisfy every palate.
The five-dessert lineup included Belgian chocolate and caramel profiteroles, "Love You Strawberry Much" éclairs, finest lemon oyster shells, raspberry profiteroles, and salted caramel profiteroles. After sampling, the Newark Advertiser team’s favorite was the lemon oyster shells.
Both Newark Advertiser editor Sharon Hodkin and news editor Rachel Armitage voted the lemon oyster as their number one due to its light and not too overpowering taste, which was also described as ‘tangy’.
Reporter Fionn Burrows said: "I've never been a big fan of choux pastry, often feeling disappointed. However, the strawberry eclairs were very very nice.
“Although launched as part of the Valentine's Day range, they were the sort of thing I could imagine enjoying on a summer's day. The flavourful strawberry and white chocolate topping, and fruity cream centre make an interesting change from the classic chocolate topped, whipped cream centred variety you could find in almost any supermarket, and I'd highly recommend them.
"But the lemon "oysters" were probably the best.
“The lemon cream was just right, and while the meringue shells could have made it all too sweet, this was balanced out nicely by the thin lay of dark chocolate in the middle.
“It felt like a proper treat. something to enjoy with an afternoon tea, or as a fancy dessert after dinner."
My personal favourite was also the lemon oyster as it had a very refreshing yet sweet taste, which in comparison to caramel or chocolate wasn’t as intense.
As someone who isn’t dessert’s biggest fan, I really enjoyed all of them and would even make my way to the dessert aisle in the supermarket just to have them again.
Reporter Eloise Gilmore’s favourite was the raspberry profiteroles. She said: “They had the perfect balance of sweetness and sharpness in the topping and the plain cream in the centre complemented it without being overpowering.
“They were also very nicely decorated with little love hearts on top which made them perfect for Valentine’s.”
The desserts were available at a range of supermarkets across the area, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda. Did you get the chance to see or try any of the Valentine’s Day desserts?
