Elston chairman proud of attendance to webinar organised by 20’ Plenty

A campaign to introduce 20mph speed limits in parts of Nottinghamshire took a step forward as more than 500 people attended an online webinar.

The event, organised by 20’s Plenty, aimed at sharing knowledge and experiences from areas where 20mph zones have been introduced.

The recent webinar attracted slightly more sign-ups than a previous session in October last year, with 800 people signing up for this one, reflecting increasing public interest in road safety.

The webinar focused on the impact of 20mph limits across the UK, with particular attention to Wales, where data from over a year of implementation suggests significant reductions in road casualties.

Speakers included officials and campaigners from areas where lower speed limits have been implemented, offering insight into how schemes were put in place, what they cost, and what benefits they have brought.

Elston Parish Council chairman Bertie Pinchera has been a leading voice in the campaign for 20mph and petitioned to introduce the ‘20’s Plenty’ campaign to lower the speed limit and improve safety and advisory signage near Elston Hall Primary School.

The petition, signed by 262 residents, was presented to Nottinghamshire County Council by Sue Saddington in December last year.

Mr Pinchera said: “The webinar was very useful as we need to be sure it's saving lives and injuries.

“People have gained a great deal from it.

“It's about waking up politicians to take the issue seriously as it's what people want in locations where they feel at risk.”

One of the key messages from the webinar was the importance of engaging political representatives and local communities to ensure broad support for 20mph zones.

Looking ahead, 20’s Plenty plans to hold further webinars and events to secure more public and political backing.

With elections approaching, campaigners are urging political parties to commit to 20mph in places where there is clear community support.

The Elston chairman believes that if the initiative is introduced, it could improve road safety, enhance air quality, and encourage sustainable transport choices across Nottinghamshire.
