Newark issued with partial ice weather warning by Met Office as December cold snap continues

A weather warning for icy conditions has been extended to include parts of Newark and the surrounding areas as the cold snap continues.

The Met Office had previously issued a yellow alert for ice on much of the East Coast of England.

Now the warning covers a greater region, taking in inland areas of Lincolnshire and parts of Nottinghamshire with Newark on the cusp of the alert.

Areas to the east of Newark are also covered, but villages to the west and south west such as Bingham and Bottesford are not covered by the weather warning.

The warning is in place for between 4pm tomorrow and midday on Friday.

The Met Office warns that there might be some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces and there will be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Temperatures across the county are expected to fall over the coming days and the UK Health Security Agency has issued a rare cold weather warning.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Frequent wintry showers running down the east coast are likely to fall on frozen surfaces in places, leading to the formation of icy patches.

"These showers are likely to fall as snow on high ground, with the potential for a few centimetres to accumulate on the North York Moors."

People are being given advice on how to stay warm because of the UKHSA alert.

Drivers are advised to take care and make necessary preparations before setting off, including clearing windscreens of frost.
