The Advertiser asks people what they like the most about Newark and why?

In its weekly voxpop the Advertiser asked people what they like about Newark?

With woes of shops and pubs closing down, perceptions of a shrinking market and suggestions of too many charity shops and nail bars, we hit the streets of Newark to find out what people are pleased with.

Opinions varied, from the quirky architecture of the historic town to its number of independent shops.

“We used to live in London but the old town has a lot of character, it is very well positioned for travel. It is very friendly,” said Peter and Yolanda Mulhern.

Julie Mills said: “It’s our home town and for me I love the architecture, I love the Georgian architecture.

“I wish we were a little way back in decades when we had a vibrant market and it was buzzing and exciting and lovely. But essentially the location by the river, the castle and the history of the place.

It’s been a lovely, safe, happy, place to raise our children.”

The town is well known for its heritage and place in British history throughout the years.

John Sears said:” I like The Royalist museum because it is interesting and I am interested in history.”

To which his wife Marry White added: “The top floor at the museum talks about women’s history, that’s excellent.”

Maggie Lennon, visiting from Birmingham, said: “Newark is lovely, very nice. The market and Wetherspoons, getting a cheap glass of wine.”

“It's the quirky little shops, it’s great. A lot of history around town, I really enjoy it,” said David Toft.

Despite the town’s ups and downs, Newark is still a place that attracts a lot of visitors, either because of its history and interesting architecture, or simply because of the number of events the town hosts throughout the year, including a beach, bookfair, steampunk festival and plenty more.

What is it that you like the most about Newark and why?
