The Newark Advertiser found out people’s opinions on the recent closure of G.H. Porter Provision on the corner of Newark Market Place and Bridge Street
In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser asked people’s views on the recent closure of the town’s historic butchers.
The owner of GH Porter Provisions announced last Friday that the business on the corner of Newark Market Place and Bridge Street has closed permanently.
Tom Blakemore said that it closed following the increased costs and other factors but he wants to ensure the continuity of the business and is appealing for anyone interested in taking over to contact him.
The butcher's had been established in the town centre since 1890 and was known for its heritage in bacon and pork products.
The Newark Advertiser found out people’s opinions on the shop closure and the loss it represents for the town.
“I wish they made more of this place, like the tables and chairs in the cafes in the corner, that makes it more attractive to people to come,” said Michael Forsyth.
He added: “The brollies are great but about Porter’s, everyone is on the same boat, it is more of the same, now that Wilkinson’s is gone what will happen to the shop?
“And there is nothing to stop it, people in retail can’t find their answer because it is the same in every town and every city.”
Morris Jones: “That is the way of the world at the moment. I mean, Wetherspoons, Wilko’s, Marks and Spencers, who’s next?
“It doesn’t matter if they are big or small shops, it affects all. I just hope Boyes doesn’t follow.”
“It doesn’t matter what street you go down, it is to let.”
People on the internet have been showing their support to the business owner but also expressing their sadness and disappointment as the historic butcher closed its doors without prior warning.
Tony Moon said: “I used to use porters, I am going to miss it. This is a loss for the town but everything is a loss for the town and unfortunately, it is a sign of the times.”
Ivone said: “It is a loss for the town and yet another loss because there are so many shops closing.”
