The Newark Advertiser asked people’s opinions on Bonfire Night firework displays
In its weekly voxpop, the Advertiser found out people’s opinion’s on Bonfire Night fireworks displays.
Bonfire Night takes place on November 5 as a celebration of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
The day is known for its big fires and firework displays, however, over the years there have been debates about its safety, importance and money expenditure.
The Newark Advertiser heard people’s opinions on the relevance of the day to the country and its celebration.
“It is tradition and it would be difficult to prevent it. A lot of people enjoy it and as long as it is done responsibly it is entertaining for people and it is fun,” said Jill Jennison.
She added: “Not everyone enjoys it but I wouldn’t want to stop it, it is part of our culture and history.”
Ricardo Boas: “I like the colours in the sky and the bang in the sky. Bonfire keeps you warm and it is good fun.
Mr and Mrs Edwards: “I do understand why people with animals don’t like the fireworks. We know some people who have to get their dogs tranquilised, I think there should be controlled displays and not sure if people should be allowed to buy their own.”
The majority of people we spoke to agreed that the fireworks displays should be in an organised and controlled environment rather than the ones people buy in shops to do in their terms and rules.
“I love it, the fireworks are so cute and when I started living in the UK I decided this was my favourite day,” said Veronika Badurova.
Daren Coe: “I like organised fireworks but I just think that general fireworks is not just contained to one night, it is two weeks of noise making which affects animals.
“Fireworks at night on New Year’s Eve is a celebration of the new year but Bonfire night we’re celebrating a failed terrorist attack from years and years ago.”
Emma Butler: “I love bonfires, it is a shame that there aren’t as many as there used to be around the town but I love fireworks and hearing them go off.”
Lucienne Butler said: “I love the fireworks but it isn’t very good for dogs.”
Bigger Bonfire Night events will be held in Newark, Southwell and Bingham.
