The Newark Advertiser found out what makes people happy as World’s Mental Health Day was celebrated this week
As this week celebrated the World’s Mental Health Day we found out what makes people happy around Newark.
From family and friends to holidays and pets, answers varied across the market town, however, some were still put on the spot and had to wonder — What makes me happy?
Every year, World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10, and this year’s theme set by the World Federation of Mental Health is workplace mental health, benefiting not only individuals but also organisations and communities as a whole.
“I changed my life, I am more spiritual and I believe that people need to learn how to love themselves before they love anybody else,” said Kat Brenton.
She added: “I go to festivals, I have retired because I am not paying into the system anymore the way it is and I am lucky with my life.”
Lesley Park said: “What makes me happy is having my freedom.
“I am very lucky that I am happy on my own but I am a very sociable person. I think the key is to be happy within yourself and have contentment.
“I am not perfect but that is really what does it for me.”
Mike Lowe said: “Being married and having a happy family.”
Susan Walker said: “All sorts make me happy. I like it when it is a nice day, I am fairly happy anyway so.
“Most things make me happy, I don’t like the way that the world is going and that makes me unhappy and I don’t like this government but apart from that most things make me happy.”
Shelly Robertson said: “The sun and general happiness make me happy.”
Valerie Lloyd said: “Just being alive, getting up every morning and knowing that I am still here.”
Kristina Zytniak said: “A few years ago I found out yoga classes and that makes me very happy, I feel a lot happier after one.
“In this town, I love during autumn and winter looking at our fireplace at home, it is magic, I couldn’t wait for the time to light it up.
“Many little things make me happy and seeing my children growing up and playing.”
Heather Brummitt said: “My friends, they are the most important people in my life and my family.”
Joanna Wilson said: “Seeing my children happy makes me happy. When they are happy and enjoying the simple things in life like collecting conkers in the park.”
Nichola Knapman said: “Sunshine and holidays and most things that people have.
“I do a bit of painting, I like doing that.”
