Newark Advertiser asks its readers what women inspired them ahead of International Women's Day
As International Women’s Day is celebrated tomorrow, the Advertiser found out who are the special women that inspire some Newarkers.
On March 8, women’s social, economic, cultural and political accomplishments around the world are celebrated and praised.
Over the years, women have been raising awareness to their place in society and the map and fighting for their rights, however, many still fight for recognition and natural rights.
In its weekly voxpop, an Advertiser reporter spoke to Newarkers to find out who are the women in their life that inspire them.
“My mum inspired me the most. She is a really hard working woman and always made sure I had the best even if she wasn’t around. She always pushed me to do better, she’s a star, bless her,” said Tricia Felt.
Resident Debbie Darby said: “I'd definitely say the Queen. God bless her, all that time to reign, she was a born fighter and served us so amazingly.
"I find it really difficult to sing God Save the King now. 70 years is amazing and in that last photograph of her she looked so frail, I really cried when she died.
"I don't think we will ever see another Queen in our lifetime and that would be a shame."
Eliska Jeshova, a worker at Tree, said: “My boss has done so much in her life, so many businesses and she just progressed by herself. It’s something I would like to do, she tries to push us to our best, she is amazing and I would like to be half of the person that she is.”
Eliska Jeshova, another worker at Tree, said: “My boss has done so much in her life, so many businesses and she just progressed by herself. It’s something I would like to do, she tries to push us to our best, she is amazing and I would like to be half of the person that she is.”
From the right to vote to the right of playing sports, working, attending school, women have fought and they have succeeded.
Today we have monarchs, athletes, prime ministers and MPs, business owners, the list is endless.
"If you think about the women who have had the most impact on the world in the past decade you have to talk about Greta Thunberg,” said Georgia Smith.
She added: “To stand up for what you believe in at such a young age and to still be fighting for those beliefs is amazing.
"Climate change is such a huge issue and you won't find anyone more passionate than her."
Andrew James said: "Victoria Wood’s talents included stand up comedian, actress, lyricist, singer, composer, pianist, screenwriter, producer and director.
"Her early death denied us of a wonderful performer and writer. Coming from the north of England myself, I empathise with her ability to get under the skin of everyday life in the North with observational comedy and kindly satire that was never aggressive but made its point nevertheless."
