Woman robbed after suffering seizure

A thief stole a woman’s bag and purse as she lay unconscious after suffering an epileptic seizure.

Miss Kelly Grand-Scrutton (22) collapsed outside her home in Parliament Street, Newark, just after leaving for work.

She was unconscious for 40 minutes.

When she came round she had a bloody nose and her purse and pink bag containing her work uniform were missing.

Confused and distraught Miss Grand-Scrutton, who remembers nothing of what happened to her, made her way to the Subway sandwich bar in Stodman Street where she works.

When she got there she realised her ear-rings were also missing.

She told her manager what had happened who called the police and an ambulance.

Miss Grand-Scrutton was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 14. She takes six tablets a day to control it.

She had not suffered an attack for three weeks.

It is the second time she has been robbed while suffering a seizure.

The first was two years ago in a Mansfield nightclub when her phone and wallet were taken from her handbag.

Miss Grand-Scrutton said her epilepsy was not as bad as it used to be but when she had a seizure there was nothing she could do about it.

“I have no way of defending myself,” she said.

“I was on my own doorstep. I could not have been more vulnerable. I was unconscious.

“It scares me that someone was prowling about at that time of the morning and even more that no-one appears to have seen anything.

“Maybe they did but assumed the person robbing me was trying to help, like any normal person would.

“Whoever did this is sick. I had nothing on me of value. My earrings were only worth a few pounds.

“What might have happened to me if it had been at night? I just can’t get my head around it.

“Whoever has done this could well strike again and their victim could come off a lot worse.”

Detective Inspector Mel Bowden, of Newark CID, said: “This is an abhorrent crime committed against a completely defenceless woman that should touch everyone.

“It scrapes the barrel of depravity.

“Any information received by my team will be followed up immediately. We need to apprehend this individual quickly as there is a strong risk they could strike again.”

Miss Grand-Scrutton had left her house at 6.50am on Thursday of last week. Anyone with any information should call Newark CID on 01636 605999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
