A national variety retail chain formed following the demise of Woolworths will open a store in Newark later this month.

Alworths will open in St Marks Place on Tuesday, November 23, in the units formerly occupied by Ethel Austin.

The store will be the 15th opened by Alworths nationally and will create 12 jobs.

It will stock a mixture of toys, CDs and DVDs, pic 'n' mix, homewares, stationery, seasonal and garden products.

The retailer, which celebrates its first birthday tomorrow, was set up by the ex-head of store and concessions development at Woolworths, Mr Andy Latham.

Mr Latham said: “We’re really excited to be launching in Newark and we hope the store will be well received.

"We believe that there will always be a place for traditional high street retailing and Alworths will be a local department store for Newark at the centre of its community.”

The Woolworths store on Northgate Retail Park, Newark, closed in December 2008 with the loss of 110 jobs.
