Work of Newark author Matt Haig features in Meghan Markle's guest-edited edition of Vogue

An extract from a work by best-selling author Matt Haig, who grew up in Newark, is featured in the latest edition of Vogue, guest-edited by the Duchess of Sussex.

The piece, called A Note From The Beach, is described by Meghan Markle as ‘a personal favourite, and the best reminder during the summer season...or any season, as a matter of fact.’

A Note From The Beach originally appeared in Notes On A Nervous Planet, published by Matt Haig in 2018. It is published in Vogue with his permission.

The September edition of Vogue, out now, is called Forces For Change, with a cover featuring 15 women chosen by the duchess.

The Matt Haig extract appears in the arts and culture section, in a two-page spread including a picture of a woman on a beach.

It is written from the point of view of a beach, which says it does not care what people look like when they are on the beach, that it has seen thousands of generations of humans, and says the sea hates people and calls them poisoners.

Matt Haig talked about his book, Notes On A Nervous Planet, when he headlined Newark Book Festival last year, and it was number one in the charts.

The extract chosen by Meghan from the book has been described as a poem, but Matt says it is not, rather a chapter from the book.

In his Twitter feed he said: “So happy to have a chapter of Notes On A Nervous Planet printed in Vogue this month, at the request of guest editor HRH the Duchess of Sussex.

He also refers to his struggle with mental illness and suicidal thoughts.

“HRH Duchess Meghan called me a ‘force for change’ so now I can die happy,” he said.

“I would love to go back in time and tell my young hopeless suicidal self about all of this magic to stay alive for.”

Another of Matt’s books, a children’s story called The Truth Pixie, published in January, went straight into the Sunday Times bestseller list.

The Truth Pixie Goes To School, published in July, is currently the number one best-selling children’s poetry book.
