Highways England say work on Newark's A46 roundabout will no longer take place on Friday nights
Work on three of Newark’s A46 roundabouts will no longer take place over Friday nights, to help avoid one of the town’s busiest traffic times.
Safety and maintenance work started on the A46 Newark Cattle Market roundabout began on Sunday evening.
It is the start of the first phase of a six-month programme to improve three major roundabouts on the A46 around the town.
From now until July, the A46 roundabouts near the cattle market, Brownhills, and the Friendly Farmer junction with A1 and A17 will be worked on overnight.
Mr Paul Valentine of nmcm, working on behalf of Highways England, said: “We have changed our previously advertised work schedule, Monday to Friday night, to Sunday to Thursday night, to accommodate the Friday evening traffic and to reduce disruption to the Friday night/evening economy.
“Over the next two weeks we will be removing the large splitter island on the approach to the roundabout on the Great North Road.”
The entire project will be phased, with one roundabout at a time being improved, and most of the work will take place between 8pm and 5am. It will include improving surfaces, markings, and signage.
Paul Valentine said the work had been carefully planned to keep disruption to a minimum.
The first phase of the work, for the cattle market roundabout, will last until the end of March. Work will then begin on the second phase, at the Friendly Farmer roundabout, to the end of May, and the final phase, at the Brownhills roundabout, is due to last until the end of July.
