Southwell holds yarn bombing event to commemorate first world war

Almost 4,000 knitted and crocheted items have been placed around Southwell in its latest yarn bombing event.

This year’s project commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War and featured tributes to all the Southwell men who died in the conflict.

It was co-ordinated by the Southwell Yarn Bomb Group, but also featured work by the community groups. A woman born less than a week after the armistice knitted 100 poppies.

Mrs Sue Rodgers, of the group, said: “We wanted to remember the men who had connections with Southwell who lost their lives in the First World War.

“There were no colour or size requirements so when we collected the poppies the different patterns and shades really created something very beautiful. It was very moving and effective.”

The completed items have been displayed across the town, including in shop windows, schools and the minster as well as decorating street furniture such as bollards.

The bollard covers have been created in Sherwood Foresters’ green and each features the name of a man with a Southwell connection who fought in the war...

Pupils from Lowe’s Wong Schools hung poppies, created by wrapping wool around CDs, outside their school gates and Southwell Scout Group painted poppies on rocks.

The creations will remain in place until after November 11.
