Forest View Academy's year six student Alfie Davey raised £1,500 to purchase a defibrillator

A student at Forest View Academy, New Ollerton, has been praised after raising £1,500.

Following a whole school assembly addressing the need for a defibrillator on school grounds, year six student Alfie Davey acted on the matter and raised £1,500 to purchase the life-saving piece of equipment.

The Principle of Forest View Academy Mrs Ruth Harrison said she was astounded and delighted with Alfie's achievement.

"We (the school) belong to Forge Trust, who over see several other academy's and they have been pushing an initiative for all their academy's to have defibrillators local to school, for obvious reasons," said Mrs Harrison.

"There was an assembly and we explained that we wanted to raise funds for the equipment and we then asked the children if they had any idea's."

A defibrillator is an electrical device that provides an electric shock to the heart to help control heart fibrillation.

Alfie, 10, who has struggled with severe asthma for the majority of his childhood, was inspired by the chance of helping his school and started fundraising for the life-saving machine.

"I am very proud," said Andy Davey, Alfie's father, who is the landlord of the Jolly Roger pub in New Ollerton.

"He did all sorts of things to raise the money for the defibrillator and worked very hard for it.

"I think his experience with asthma inspired him and made him want to help everyone else.

"He has moved from Kings Mill Hospital to Basset Hospital to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and is now under care at Sheffield's Children's Hospital.

"Although things are getting better as his Asthma is currently as good as it has ever been."

Alfie served sandwiches at the Jolly Roger pub during the 2018 World Cup and like England's campaign, Alfie continued to find a surprising amount of success.

Alfie and his family also held a charity fun day in September that saw village guests enjoy the luxury of a chocolate fountain and the pain of having their leg's waxed.

The mother of Championship footballer and Queen's Park Rangers star John Baptist also donated a signed football shirt, which was put up for auction to help accumulate the remaining funds.

Andy and his wife, Michele, expressed their gratitude to all the visitors of the Jolly Rodger and said it would not have been possible without their support for Alfie.
