The image of the 89-year-old woman who was attacked in her own home in the early hours was truly shocking (Catch Thug Who Did This, Advertiser, June 15).

According to the description, the man responsible was 6ft tall. How can he live with himself?

Contrast that with the actions of the Good Samaritan who found a lost wallet in Newark town centre, worked out that it belonged to a Coddington resident and walked the 4½ miles to return it.

I firmly believe that for every thug capable of attacking an elderly and vulnerable person in their own home there are many more who would be willing to put themselves out to help others.

There was another example of this after a teenage cyclist was unfortunately hurt in a collision with a car on the bridge over the A1 at Fernwood on Sunday afternoon.

The passers-by who stopped to look after him until the emergency services arrived should be applauded for their actions.

We should not lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of people can be relied on to do the right thing, even in testing circumstances. — (Mrs) S. HOWARD, Balderton (Full address supplied).
