It is no secret that Britain’s High Streets are having a tough time, under threat from the growth of both online shopping and out-of-town retail parks.
Newark cannot entirely escape these forces.
Our local Marks and Spencer store would like to relocate to Northgate and double its size.
This plan is bound to do some damage to businesses in our town centre — we need only to look at the impact on Worksop and Grantham when their branches of M&S closed.
Certainly, their current shopping offering does not compare with ours.
Prestigious retail giants like M&S are very powerful and where they go others follow.
If they close, others close.
On balance, we should welcome the decision to stay in Newark and I know many will welcome a bigger store with easier parking.
Let us ensure that traffic issues are minimised by a roundabout on Northgate and we must hope that the empty town centre space, maybe split into smaller units, can be re-let. — Chris Adams, Newark branch Liberal Democrats, Brewers Wharf, Newark.
