Emma Dolan wins the Commonwealth Title at Carl Greaves 150th boxing show at the Newark Showground as Jamie Behan, Connor Meanwell, Tom Cowling, Tom Pogson and James Richardson get wins in their fights
Carl Greaves 150th show did not disappoint as adopted Newarker Emma Dolan was crowned the new Commonwealth champion after going the distance and outboxing tough Tanzanian Halima Vunjabei.
The evening saw many well wishes expressed to the veteran trainer and promoter from all across the boxing world.
The lead up to the fight featured a great card of action packed boxing.
Greaves promoted fighter Tyler Rivers started off the evening with an exhibition bout against Callum Hill.
Rivers controlled the tempo throughout in the fight where the result was not recorded due to it being an exhibition.
Newark's Connor Meanwell won his bout against a highly experienced and talented Dale Arrowsmith who was in his 83rd fight.
Meanwell's explosiveness and hunger saw him get the win in an entertaining fight for spectators.
Meanwell will now be looking to have a well deserved short break before looking to get another couple of fights in before the year is out.
Another hometown fighter, Tom Cowling was up next and went 10-0 as he defeated Martin Shaw convincingly.
Cowling said after the bout that he felt comfortable throughout the fight.
"Tom Cowling looked really good and could of got his opponent out of there anytime he wanted but he boxed to instructions never loaded up and put on a masterclass to go 10-0," said Greaves.
Jamie Behan from Lincoln and a Carl Greaves promoted fighter came off the back of a good debut to go 2-0 against Richard Helm from Rochdale.
The fighter known as the poacher got the decision in a solid performance for his second fight.
Also making his second fight on the card was Boston's Tom Pogson.
The Carl Greaves promoted fighter got a points victory over Darryl Sharp as the hardworking Pogson delivered a strong performance.
James Richardson was the last bout before the main event and the Greaves promoted fighter did not disapoint as he went 5-0.
The undefeated boxer from Scunthorpe was too strong for his opponent, experienced Jordan Grannum as he scored the points win.
The main event saw Emma Dolan go 5-0 herself as she secured the Commonwealth title against a tough Halima Vunjabei.
The Tanzanian fighter did not make it easy as she landed a solid shot in the second round on Dolan.
However, Dolan recovered and from that point on was the main aggressor as she landed hard shots of her own at will.
Vunjabei showed her strong chin and will as Dolan landed some big hits on her opponent much to the delight of the crowd.
It is safe to say by the backing of the crowd and the vocal support shown that Newark has adopted Dolan as one of its own.
The end of the fight saw Dolan secure the vacant Commonwealth super-flyweight title infront of former Commonwealth champions Nina Bradley and Stacey Copeland.
"I’m happy that after all the work me, Carl and Adam have put in we have something to show for it," said Dolan.
"We have only been together for such a short time and I know this is only the start.
"I’ll speak to Carl about what’s next but there’s no crazy rush.
"I’m only 24 and I will take the right fights at the right time but we are definitely now edging closer to the ultimate goal of being a world champion."
Greaves has previously said Dolan potentially has what it takes to be a world champion.
He added that he is excited to see where the future takes his fighters and is looking forward to what lies ahead.
"Now I've had 150 shows, a lot of people in the game would like to see me get a TV deal due to the fact I know the game inside out.
"I always manage to put on a good show, relying on ticket sales and sponsorship only, which is very difficult."
There was also a charity auction where over £1000 was raised for a charity that Greaves is an ambassador for, Reverse Rett.
"Being an ambassador for Reverse rett I always try and raise money and awareness for the charity which is close to my heart as my press officers daughter Georgia suffers from Rett syndrome," said Greaves.
"On Saturday I'm delighted to say that over £1000 was raised due to the generosity of the people that donated and took part in the auction."
