Amateur boxers got their opportunity to shine in the ring as Newark’s Epic Golden Gloves Gym hosted a show at Magnus Community Sports Centre.

Epic had six winners during the competition, which saw them pitted against boxers from across the country.

Head coach Esham Pickering, who believes the club could become a dominant force, said he was proud of the effort his fighters showed.

"We have 20 carded boxers on our books," he said. "For a small town to have so many boxers means a lot.

"I am confident that we are going to be a dominant club.

"I am happy to help youngsters get on the right track."

Pickering said he was grateful to trainer Clownes Steele for his help.

Dan Canter secured his third successive victory with a split-decision victory against Connor Daly, of Islington BC.

Canter, who has showed a vast improvement in recent weeks after getting to the right weight, came through a close contest.

Charlie Harris claimed a third successive win with a first-round knockout of Owen Fox, of Clifton BC.

After losing his first eight fights, Harris has reaped the benefit of using advice he has been given.

Edvin Pateckis won his debut bout against Connor Gorey with a superb performance.

Jacob Price defeated Billy Cowling, who is also from Newark but boxes for South Normanton ABC.

James Fury defeated Larry Rooney, of Bracebridge BC.

Home boxer Sonny Steele topped the bill with an East Midlands eliminator title bout against Jack Johnson, of East Shilton BC.

Defeated by the same boxer a few weeks ago, he produced a better performance but fell to a narrow loss.

There were close defeats for club members Jake Ludlam, Leonard Herne, Troy Christie and Sal Aslem.

Epic will be hosting its next home bout at Magnus on May 27.
