A busy weekend for Newark Hockey Club saw the men's 1sts narrowly lose while the ladies managed a home win
The men’s 1sts edged past West Bridgford 3rds thanks to impressive performances from Sam Smith and Kian Hunter.
But their victorious showing was not replicated against Chesterfield’s 1sts as their three-match unbeaten run was wiped out.
The narrow 2-1 loss saw Newark end their unbeaten run in their fourth game of the season.
The game started strongly for Newark and the visitors pushed Chesterfield deep into their own half.
After several chances, Newark’s best opportunity fell through an unlikely scramble at the top of the D.
Hunter somehow managing to score from a deflected effort for the second week in a row.
Chesterfield replied through a short corner, which led to a drag flick into the bottom corner.
Newark missed a brilliant chance at the back post as the game opened up.
As the sides took turns to attack, Chesterfield eventually found the break-through, via a deflection off the keeper.
Newark left disappointed with the result, and rightly so, given with the majority of the game was played in the opposition’s half.
Newark ladies 1sts started at pace in their fixture against Derby 1sts but fell short in the later stages and lost 6-2.
Derby capitalised on the game and took the lead in the tenth minute when the ball rebounded off the post and slipped past the Newark keeper.
With half-time approaching, Newark drew level, but two late first-half goals gave the hosts an undeserved two-goal lead.
The second-half saw Newark concede another two goals in quick succession, in what was a cagey affair.
The 2nds went head-to-head with North Notts’ 2nds and came out with a 2-1 victory following a nervous final five minutes.
Gabrielle Lucas was named player-of-the-match after a solid performance that saw her link up well with Sara Jackson and debutant Ellie Peachment.
The 2nds started well against a strong Notts side, but Jackson broke the deadlock and relaxed the Newark players.
Newark went in 1-0 up, but Notts managed an early second-half goal after good work around the D.
After what seemed a long wait, Newark finally took their chance and it was newcomer Peachment who smashed the ball home.
The 3rds suffered a 4-1 defeat to Worksop and it could have been more if it was not for the brilliant work of Freya Crocock in the Newark goal.
Worksop stormed to a two-goal lead, before adding a third from a penalty corner.
Newark were reduced to 11 players after Louis Hopper picked up an injury from a lifted ball, but the team fought back well, and got on the score-sheet through Zoe White.
Minute’s before the final-whistle, Worksop added a fourth.
Newark’s Emily Crisp shared the player-of-the-match award with Grocock following her impressive display.
The 4ths returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over West Bridgford 5ths.
Newark dominated possession, which presented numerous chances to the likes of Alex Olivant, Kate Revill and Imogen Kennett.
Newark took the lead just before half-time through Olivant, who slotted away Jess Hull’s pass.
West Bridgford drew level but Newark’s quality showed when Olivant added her second, before Revill scored to confirm the win.
