Newark Town get revenge against Birstall United with comfortable 3-1 win in United Counties League Division One match

It was a comfortable 3-1 win for Newark Town who defeated Birstall United at home in front of 178 people.

The United Counties Division One clash saw The Blues’ captain Lewis Chambers step up and net two against the team who were responsible for knocking the side out of the playoffs last season.

Chambers opened up the scoring with a powerful header in the 15th minute to put the hosts ahead.

The score was the only goal in the first-half and Newark came off at the break up 1-0.

Birstall came out in the early stages of the second-half determined to tie the game up and in the 55th minute they equalised thanks to a goal from Karl Whymark.

Jack Beckett made the most off a Ryan Smith chip just over 20 minutes later to again put Newark in the lead.

In the dying stages of the game, Smith again applied pressure which led to the captain netting his second and putting the game beyond doubt.

The Blues walked off the field in front of elated fans winning the game by two goals.

“It was a tough game, the first 35 minutes or so we played well.

“We were certainly the better team.

“We then kind of went a little bit too long and brought them into the game for the last ten minutes of the first-half.

“I told the lads at half-time that their confidence will now be up and we have made it more difficult than the game needs to be.

“In the second-half, the first 20 minutes was their game, they got the equiliser.

“I thought after that, once Jack Beckett scored from that point we were absolutely superb.

“We had a few injuries and we will be hoping to have a few bodies back next game.

“It was nice to get the three points from that result.

“The support really helped us through, we have had some great supporters this season.

“It really gets the place buzzing.

“On Saturday, we will be at Bourne who are the league leaders.

“It is probably the biggest game of the season.”
