Newark Golf Club’s Captain’s day raises over £500 for Dementia UK
An annual captain's day raised over £500 for Dementia UK at Newark Golf Club.
The charity is dear to club captain Mick Carman's heart as his daughter works for the charity and his mother had dementia.
Carman's wife Alison and his daughter Rachel were on hand to collect donations on the day which saw 167 golfers take part in the members-only event.
All golfers who participated are members of the Newark Golf Club and were given cakes, teas, and coffees.
"I organised a barbecue and a pint for when they completed the course," said Carman.
"The day is an opportunity for the club captain to give back to the players and club.
"It is a competition where the winner gets their name on the board for winning the captain's day prize."
The Captain's Day prize was won over 18 holes by Mark Travers with the ladies' prize being won by Ana Garcia Campoy and Charlie Cooke picking up the junior prize honours.
Carman has been a golfer for more than 30 years and joined the Newark Golf Club close to 25 years ago.
He has recently retired following 43 years working for the Newark and Sherwood District Council.
The role of the club captain is varied from representing the club at team matches to supporting other team players including participating in all ability team matches.
The tee-off time for the day went from 7.30am to 2.30pm with weather presenting an issue.
"Despite torrential rain at times, at one point for at least an hour with some thunder and lightning in the distance, people kept going.
"It was great to see people persevere in somewhat trying conditions."
