Barbel record broken on Trent
There’s astonishing news this week that a British record barbel has been caught from Newark Federation’s water on the River Trent.
However, the captor, who hails from Boston and is a regular on the river, will not be claiming the record with his 22lb fish.
He doesn’t want the river overrun with “glory hunters” and wishes to continue to fish in relative peace and quiet.
The huge fish took a boilie hair-rigged to a size six hook and came from a stretch of river downstream from Newark.
The Crow Trees section of the Newark Dyke has been in good form for the open matches, and the midweek match attracted an entry of 23.
It was won by Newark’s Neil Campion on peg eight with four chub on the feeder and skimmers on the float for 18-1-0, with Lincs County’s Chris Elsom in second with 16-5-0 from peg 19 on Devon Mouth, boosted by a couple of feeder-caught chub.
There was a smaller turnout for Saturday’s match won by Dave Powell of Worksop with 16-12-0 of float-caught roach, with Dean Smith of Lincoln in second place with 15-4-0 of skimmers caught on the feeder.
Collingham’s match on the tidal river was slightly better than the previous week, but 12 of the 16 anglers still blanked.
Winner was Jason Jeale with five barbel on the maggot feeder for 14-12-0 and second was Brian Richardson with two chub on the same method for 5-2-0.
New Inn fished at Haverholme where some good carp were caught and plenty lost. Stevie Baker was the winner with one carp on the feeder and the rest foulhooked on the pellet waggler, casting across his neighbour Ricky Lale for a winning weight of 41-11-0.
Runner-up was Nigel Lale with carp on pellet and feeder for 34-8-0, while his son Ricky got his own back and had three carp on the feeder from Baker’s peg and two lumps down the edge for third with 33-7-0.
The biggest cheer of the day was for Robert Hubbard who thrashed professional angler Mick Warner off the next peg with 13-1-0 to Warner’s 3-9-0.
It was most unusual to see Hubbard hook a large carp, and play it for ten minutes before putting the rod down and nipping into the bushes to answer a call of nature.
He then picked the rod up and played the fish for another ten minutes. Then he went and lost it.
King William fished at Priory Lakes at Ruskington where the winner was Mick Burgess who fished pellet on peg ten for 90-4-0 of carp, while Mick Shalloe was second, fished maggot for a level 60-0-0.
Southwell fished at Clearwater, Ranskill, where the winner was Ron Martin who fished maggot on the pole to weigh 45-1-0 of skimmers to finish well clear of second-placed Fred Cooper who fished worm to catch 26-6-0 of ide.
Railway Club fished at Whisby Garden Centre where the winner was Ron Sutton who fished bread on the feeder for 37-11-0. Pete Knott fished pole and pellet and was second with 31-1-0.
An open match was held at Marnham Pond where the winner was Tony Mills who fished maggot to take 20-8-0 of silver fish, while John Wentworth was second with 18-2-0.
