Newark Golf Club in Nottinghamshire host the Moundbuilders Country Club from Newark, Ohio for the Advertiser Cup in the lead up to the Ryder Cup




Two teams from towns with the same name from opposite ends of the earth will be competing in what has become an annual competition.

Newark Golf Club in Nottinghamshire is hosting The Moundbuilder Country Club from Newark, Ohio, USA.

The Newark Advertiser Cup started in 1995 and it is the 15th meeting between the two clubs.

The meetings coincide with the week before the Ryder Cup and are played in the country that is hosting the competition.

Many golfers go on to watch the competition after the two clubs compete against each other.

The Newark competition is a similar format to the Ryder Cup and features three days of competition featuring foursomes on day one, four ball better ball on day two, and singles on the final day.

"It has been great to have them here after a two-year delay due to covid," said Newark Golf Club captain David Fox.

"The competition is back on track which is great to see.

"We host each other and billet with each other, staying with each other's families.

"Strong friendships have been forged.

"The captains up until 2018 were the same, Walter Hughes was the previous British captain and the American captain Jim Van Gilder has unfortunately passed away.

"Newark Nottinghamshire have won seven events, four have been won by Mountbuilders and three have been halved.

"It has been a tough-fought competition between the two clubs."

So the tourists have visited Newark Castle and the marketplace.

The Americans said that they loved the history of the area and made jokes about the weather.

The current American club captain Michael Myers said that the side were enjoying the area and the hospitality that Newark Golf Club provided.

"I was here in 2014, we feel like we have a chance and we will put our best out.

"The big change to when I was here last time is that the club has switched the nine holes.

"This club is similar to our club in Ohio, it is flat and there are a lot of mature trees.

"Our club has been there since 1910.

"It is called Moundbuilders Country Club because there are ancient Native American mounds.

"We are fighting to keep the club because it has been given a world heritage designation.

"The Ohio History Connection is trying to remove the country club.

"We are fighting this and we still have 57 years on our lease so we hope we can host the Brits again in two years."
