League battles in the hockey for Newark and South Nottinghamshire clubs as several highscoring games leave spectators on the edge of their seats




A thumping defeat by Nottingham Trent University was not the result Newark Hockey Club men’s 1sts wanted as they went down 12-0.

Newark 2nds faired better as they put in a solid performance to gain a 2-1 win over Beeston.

A back-and-forth first-half saw the momentum gradually shift as Newark took charge.

The first-half ended with Newark up 1-0.

The side scored their second goal early after half-time before Beeston pegged one back to finish the game 2-1.

The South Nottingham Men’s 1sts took on Nottingham University in a tough match.

A tireless work rate by South Nottingham went up against an extremely well-drilled university side producing an impressive watch for spectators.

The university side continued its successful season and managed a 4-0 win.

The South Notts club took a lot of positives from the match with a spokesman saying if the side played like that every week, they would be a serious challenge to any team.

South Nottingham 2nds played Nottingham Hockey Club in a closely contested match.

A tight game was played throughout before Nottingham scrambled a late goal to win 2-1 in the closing minutes over South Notts in a match that could have gone either way.

The South Notts 3rds made a real statement of intent for the league title as they secured a strong 4-0 victory against Belper.

Midfield control resulted in constant precise deliveries to the forward line and the goals piled in for a dominant South Nottingham team.

James Bellamy scored a driving goal and captain Stuart Croston scored another devastating hat-trick.

A formidable Beeston side took seven goals against South Notts 4ths, but South Nottingham never gave up as Adam Hopewell fired one back to make it 7-1.

The Newark Ladies 3rds suffered a narrow defeat as they went down to a Trent Vale 1st side 2-1.

Newark had plenty of chances but couldn’t convert enough of them to take the lead.

South Nottingham Ladies are top of their league division and rivals powerful Redhill are a close second, the match was highly anticipated by both sides.

The South Nottingham defence held firm against waves of Redhill attacks before South Notts’ midfield began to assert control.

Rose Cartwright suddenly appeared out of nowhere, to Redhill’s surprise, as she craftily ghosted through the Redhill defence to rattle the Redhill backboard.

Kate Parker added to the score for South Notts making it 2-0.

Further cracking goals added by Emma Turner, Sammy Markwick, Gemma Robinson, and a brace by Alex McCusker-Stevenson made it 7-0 to South Notts who keep their place at the top of the table.
