Boxer Jake Sharp's relief at brain scan result
Boxer Jake Sharp spoke of his relief at receiving the all-clear from the British Boxing Board of Control after a brain scan.
The 22-year-old super-middleweight, of Newark, started training at the Carl Greaves Boxing Academy ten months ago under the supervision of Andrew Lowe.
He was set to make his professional debut at the Harvey Hadden Stadium, but was told the British Boxing Board of Control were not satisfied with his brain scan weeks before the bout.
Sharp had to miss a successful show, which saw victories for Newark’s Adam Kettleborough and Nathan McIntosh.
He was left with a nervous wait to see if there were further problems, but after a meeting where his MRI scan was discussed he was given the all-clear to hold his professional boxing licence.
“At first I was more annoyed than anything,” Sharp said.
“I was into the back end of our training camp and settling down for the fight, then you are dealt a blow and within ten seconds go from a good feeling to a bad feeling.
“After a couple of days you then start to think about your health and, rather than fighting, you are just hoping you are going to be okay.
“There is a lot of mixed emotions.”
'Massively relieved'
After his good news, Sharp is now focused once again on making his first professional appearance in the ring.
“I was massively relieved,” he said.
“I had got a lot of people who wanted to support me at Harvey Hadden and we are just looking at this as a minor setback.
“There is a potential date for me to fight in May, which would be good so I don’t have to wait too long for my first fight.
“I had a couple of weeks off, but I am going to be back in the gym fighting hard and working towards my next outing.”
His promoter, Carl Greaves, said he was pleased Sharp could once again focus on his boxing.
“They have given him a unanimous decision on his scan, which is very good. Whatever the issue was before it looks better now,” he said.
“Hopefully he will be back in the ring very soon and start to make a name for himself.”
