Race driver Tom Gamble from Epperstone’s who is a McLaren factory driver lays out his plans for the 2024 season
Epperstone’s McLaren factory racing driver Tom Gamble’s plans for his 2024 season are out
after he made two announcements last week writes Paul Horton.
It will be an exciting year for 22-year-old Gamble, as he will take on the British GT Championship — Britain’s prestige endurance racing series comprising of seven rounds and nine races.
Gamble will team up with Mark Radcliffe, who takes on the series for his second year with Wakefield based Optimum Motorsport.
The duo were intra-team rivals over the last few months when they contested the Winter
2023/24 Asian Le Mans Series — racing in Bahrain, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi on opposite sides of Optimum’s garage.
They have now joined forces for a British GT Championship assault that promises a great deal as they look to challenge for the championship title.
Their motorsport weapon of choice is the magnificent #27 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo
endurance racing machine that’s capable of reaching speeds of around 124 mph in 7.8 seconds.
Gamble’s second news scoop of the week was that he will continue to be a British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) Superstar.
Part of the BRDC programme focused on developing the most promising young British drivers across all classes of racing.
This sits alongside the Club’s introductory Young Driver programme; BRDC Rising Stars which he became a member of several years ago now.
Gamble is one of McLaren’s select few works drivers who joined the factory ranks at the start of last year.
He has made two previous British GT3 starts to his name, albeit back in 2019, but did make a one-off appearance in Paddock Motorsports McLaren Artura GT4 at Donington Park last season.
This saw him take a podium 3 rd place in the GT4 Pro Am class.
“I’m really excited to be paired with Mark for the 2024 British GT season and to be returning to some of my favourite circuits,” said Gamble.
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity; we have a strong chance of challenging for overall wins and for the championship, which ultimately is our main goal.
“The car feels great, so we have the tools to get the job done.”
In his first full British GT season campaign competing on home soil in the 720S GT3 Evo, teammate Radcliffe collected three overall podiums.
His most significant achievement was a second-place finish in the blazing Portuguese heat at the series’ international round, which this year heads back to Spa-Francorchamps, where Gamble took Gold Cup class honours in last year’s CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.
This year’s British GT Championship begins at Oulton Park on March 30 – April 1 with a duo of one-hour races.
