Captain’s crew win exchange challenge

Newark Golf Club captain Barre Ramsbottom was delighted to lead his team to victory in the exchange match with Louth.

The morning event was a team stableford competition played over nine holes, and it was won by Ramsbottom, John Cooke junior and Keith Whitfield, with the team totalling 36 points.

The afternoon format was an individual stableford played over 18 holes and the winner with 38 points was junior member Tom Ablewhite, scoring four gross birdies and two pars.

Andy Greenberry took second place with 36 points, while countback was needed to separate Paul Matthews into third and Clyde Scothern into fourth place after both scored 35 points.

Tim Cooke had the lowest gross score which produced 35 points. Nearest the pin at the ninth was John E. Cooke junior, while nearest the pin at the 15th was John E. Cooke senior.

The Newark team of Ramsbottom, Colin Horner, Alan Garrow and Pat Burke took the honours at the Notts President’s Am-Am four-ball betterball stableford tournament at Chilwell Manor.

The Newark captain’s team scored 85 points to pip Beeston Fields by a point, with Chilwell third with 82 points.

Results, Newark Golf Club seniors’ betterball stableford open: 1 Ron Torn and Dick Ingram (Gainsborough) 45pts (countback); 2 Lewis White and Reg Dove (Newark) 45pts; 3 Howard Andrew and Rod Andrew (Doncaster and Totley) 44pts (countback); 4 Geoff Peach and Dave Revill (Coxmoor) 44pts (countback); 5 Eric Carding and Jim Carter (Cosby) 44pts.

Summer stableford: 1 Patrick Mountfield 39pts; 2 James Burrows 38 pts; 3 John R. Hallam 37pts.

Southwell Golf Club had some excellent scores at their President’s Day.

In the men’s section it was Mick Foster who collected the President’s Bowl with 41 points, while a close runner-up was junior captain Chris Crerand with 40 points, and third place went to Roger Ruane on 39 points.

Marj Foster, the wife of the men’s section winner, almost made it a double celebration with her 39 points, but she was beaten into second place by the in-form Sue Nickless who returned an excellent 42 points to collect the President’s Vase. Third place went to Val James with 38 points.

Nearest the pin on the ninth hole were Ewan Watson and Sue Nickless, while Graham Shepherdson and Liz Martin were nearest on the 18th hole.

Junior member Sam Wright shot a tremendous 45 points to win the men’s monthly stableford, with Mark Lally the runner-up on 37 points.

Bob Rice won Division Two on a countback from Russ Ashmore after both returned 36 points.

The Hall of Fame Competitions saw Sam Stead take the top honours in the men’s section on countback from Julian Phillips and Robert Kirkham, who all returned nett 69s.

The senior Hall of Fame stableford was won by John Thompson with 37 points, with Derek Webb runner-up on 36 points, while third place went to Barry Charlesworth with 35 points.

The ladies’ Am-Am was won with an excellent 84 points by Judy Fishell, Alison Southwell, Trudi Manterfield and Kate Crowther of Ramsdale Golf Club, while second place went to the Stanedge Golf Club team of Chris Hurley, Julie Ryder, Barbara Taylor and Shelia Whelan with 78 points.

Third spot went to Sue Nickless, Jan Britnell, Janet Leather and Di Whiteley on a countback from Wendy Stretch, Marj Foster, Megan Allen and Linda Sear after both teams from the host club finished with 74 points.

Nearest the pin went to Kate Crowther of Ramsdale, while and the most accurate drive went to Gill Blain of Springwater.
