Newark has a new national champion. On Sunday, at Larford Lakes near Stourport, Worcestershire, Got Baits-sponsored Carl Williams won the Maver British Pole Championship.

He made the most of an end peg on the match lake to land 241lbs of carp.

Carl qualified for the final at Decoy Lakes, Whittlesea, in April. Apart from a couple of top of the range rods and a trophy, the winner’s cheque will go some way towards covering his fuel costs for the year.

I doubt there is a more dedicated angler in the country when it comes to pursuing match fishing success and it’s a well-earned victory.

After Portland last week, it was Girton Mill Dam’s turn for a new venue record with the visit of Railway Club on the match lake.

Chris Young, fishing dead red maggots down the edge on peg eight, smashed the old record with 306-15-0 of carp.

Ian Young in second place wasn’t far behind, fishing the same tactics on peg six to finish with 278-7-0 and in third Neil Campion also managed the double ton on peg four, finishing with 214-14-0, also on dead maggots. Fourth was John Spowage on peg five, fishing dead reds and paste for 153-5-0.

In total, there were eight ton-plus weights in the six-hour contest.

This week: Haverholme.

New Inn fished at Metheringham Fen Lake where there were also eight tons in the five-hour match.

Winner on peg 15 was Simon Curtis who fished pole in front and then down the edge, swapping between pellet and maggot on the hook, to finish with 171-1-0. Runner up, on peg two, was Pete Willis who started on a pellet feeder then switched to dead reds down the edge for 160-11-0 and in third was Darren Neal on peg ten, fishing pole and pellet for 151-1-0. Alan Atkinson was fourth with 139-14-0 on peg seven.

This week: Peacock Lake, Gunthorpe.

Despite not being on a commercial fishery, Collingham also managed a ton winning weight on the tidal Trent at Collingham with 19 members fishing.

Again, the private pegs dominated the results with the top five fishing in a row.Winner was Bobby Thurston, on peg six, who fished a maggot feeder for an all-barbel catch of 113-1-0 with the fish averaging 7lbs.

In second, Shane Spafford, on peg seven, included some double figure barbel in his 57-11-0, also caught on maggot feeder, and third was Ken Clark on peg five with 52-13-0. Malcolm Nicholson was fourth on peg eight with 4-4-0 of barbel but also lost eight good fish. Howard Langley was fifth with 19-0-0 on peg nine.

This week: Millennium.

A mention for my very old mate Jack Kinsella who managed a good second place in last week’s LVA match at Lodge Farm, Scrooby Top, on Field Lake with 138-11-0.

Southwell fished at Stretton on the match lake and the winner was Colin Hargreaves, fishing as a guest on peg one using pole and pellet for 58-15-0.

Second was Robert Wagstaffe with 47-7-0 and third was Ron Martin fishing maggot for 46-9-0.

This week: Federation match at East Stoke.
